I use both…
African-American i’m sure is preferred more though. If someone gives you a hard time about it, i’d ignore them. But it also depends on how you use it.

My imediate family none are african american plainly because have never been nor want to africa yes may have desended from africans but black would be better as black or black or black person.

For the american sounds stupid how can subcategorize race has sole ownership of america and relate them to place they have never been why arent whites called euroamericans no one race of america except for the native americans so either everyone gets supcategorized.

Well, are they AFRICAN or are they AMERICAN. You can’t be both. Time to trash those HYPHENATED American phrases. Either you’re an American or you’re not.
