I loved The Once and Future King (about King Arthur, and, on a metaphorical level, about England’s historical development, pacifism, and politics). Good fat novel you can spend a few weeks reading. Or finish in a couple sustained days. It’s a great story and it made me fall in love with the King Arthur legend.
Assuming you’re in high school, at that age I loved Herbert’s Dune series (sci-fi), Adams’ HItchhiker’s Guide the Galaxy, Richard Bach’s Illusions and Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the plays The Crucible (Arthur Miller), Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare), Antigone (Sophocles), and Cyrano de Bergerac (Edmond Rostand), also Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon, and, perhaps most of all S. Morgenstern’s The Princess Bride (yes, it’s a book too, and even funnier than the movie).
Recently, I’ve been on a mystery novel bender and have been eating up Swedish novelist Henning Mankell’s books. And I always return to anything by Marget Atwood, Angela Carter, Charlotte Bronte, Henry James, Octavia Butler (sci-fi again), and Jorge Luis Borges (he’s just unclassifiable and odd). I also love early Salman Rushdie (Midnight’s Children in particular), but his last 3 or 4 books have sucked. Umberto Ecco’s also a good standby — In the Name of the Rose is a great, quirky, brainy mystery novel.
